Who Are the Field Naturalists?
Object: To foster an interest in nature.
The Field Naturalists' Association of Canberra Inc.(FNAC) was formed in 1981. Its aim is to foster interest in natural
history by means of meetings and regular field outings. Meetings are usually held on the first Thursday of each
month, except January. Field outings range from day trips to weekends away. Activities are advertised in our monthly
newsletter. Informality and the enjoyment of nature are emphasised.
Currently, the FNAC has 100 members from all walks of life. Members range from those who are highly
knowledgeable regarding aspects of the natural environment and environmental issues, to those who enjoy the
natural environment and wish to learn more about it. Members are friendly, helpful and welcoming.
New members are always welcome.
What We Do
Meetings Information:
Day: First Thursday of each month
Time: Meetings start at 7.30 pm and are followed by supper
Venue: Division of Botany and Zoology, Building 116, Daley Road, Australian National University, Canberra
Parking is available across Daley Road, or behind Building 116
Guest Speakers: Interesting and informative guest speakers are engaged to provide talks on topics relating to the
natural environment and issues of interest to FNAC members. They are sincerely welcomed and appreciated.
Field Outings:
Two types of field outings are held by the Field Naturalists' Association of Canberra Inc. - a) part, or whole, day trips;
and b) weekend trips. A day trip is organised each month, which usually is closely related to each month's guest
speaker talk topic. These are held within the Canberra / ACT region. During any year, a small number of weekend
trips are conducted. More distant environmental locations are visited on weekend trips.
All field outings are led by people who are knowledgeable about various environmental matters.
Canberra is fortunate to have a large number of such persons on whom to call.
FNAC members also sincerely welcome, and appreciate, the commitment of those people who so willingly provide
their time and expertise for all to enjoy and from whom they can gain knowledge.
A wide range of environmental features, both natural and human-made, are viewed in total each year. This caters for
the diversity of interests of FNAC members.
Involvement and Advice:
The Field Naturalists' Association of Canberra Inc. takes a serious and pro-active approach to environmental
management and protection within Canberra and the Australian Capital Territory. Members are capable of conducting
research and providing advice to planners and governmental bodies alike regarding environmental situations.

"NATChat"
The Field Naturalists have their own chat-line, which is used to keep members informed of activities and natural
history items of interest. This chat-line runs in addition to the Field Naturalists' website.
It is very useful to be able to let members know of events which we find out about after the "Field Natter" Newsletter
has been produced and which occur before the next edition of "Field Natter" comes out. Members can post items to
NATChat, though to date most of the items have been provided by Tony Lawson. Thanks are extended to those
people who have recently sent in items of interest.
They have been gratefully received. If you would like to join, send an email to:-
