The Lure of the Lyrebird
Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 7:30 pm
Speakers: Don and Gwen McGregor
Come along to what promises to be an excellent presentation on Lyrebirds. By use of movie camera, still photography
and sound recordings Don and Gwen McGregor have managed to conduct a comprehensive study of the lyrebird from
nest, egg, chick (feeding of) fledgling, to male display and mimicry. The presentation includes anecdotal comments (to
support or disprove many current theories) and climaxes with excellent footage of the male presenting his full concert.
The male's display (movie) includes the sound track of 21 mimicked birds.
Bring along friends and acquaintances to what should be a great start to the year.
Legionella in the Natural and Built Environment
Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 7.30 pm
Speaker: Clive Broadbent
Clive Broadbent is a Canberra-based consultant specialising in preventive measures for Legionnaires' disease
hazards and other building microbial control issues. Recent clients have included paper mills, oil refineries, mining
sites, and power stations as well as a plethora of commercial buildings having cooling water systems and
air-handling plants that may potentially present hazards to health.
Legionnaires' disease is an atypical pneumonia caused by the Legionella genus of microorganisms. Presence of
Legionella bacteria in the World is widespread, as discovered by microbial ecologists.
This talk will briefly cover the background in science and application in engineering. It is surely so, that engineering
measures such as clean water supplies and hygienic conditions in cities have prevented disease even more
effectively than have medical interventions.
